The Russian invasion and war in Ukraine have damaged large rural areas, including relevant food supply chains, agriculture, food hubs, production areas, water supply systems as well as ecology and environment. The Ukrainian Government is planning the post-war recovery and rebuilding phase of the country with as much support from Western partners.

Wageningen University and Research (WUR) is known worldwide for its expertise in land and water management. The Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences (UAAS) requested WUR to support and assist the re-development of the land and water sector through capacity building and the start of a mutual cooperation. As the first step in this process  the “UAAS - WUR webinar on integrated land and water management in Ukraine” was held on the 30th of September in online format.

The webinar objectives were:

  • Getting to know each other
  • Better understanding of the current situation in Ukraine; United 24 policy and EU integration
  • Review of the need for Technical assistance Expertise; needs and priorities
  • Showcase some WUR and UAAS expertise and projects of interest for each other
  • Priority setting and next steps for cooperation

More than 90 participants from WUR and UAAS and its related institutes (Institute of Water Problems and Land Reclamation, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, National University of Water and Environmental Sciences, Agro-Ecology Institute etc), Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food,  Dutch Embassy in Ukraine, State Agencies for Water Resources and Fishery and Melioration took part in the event.
